Museums in Guernsey

Candie Museum: Officially named "Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery", the museum stands on an elevated site in the magnificent Candie Gardens. The grandeur of these Victorian lawns and terraces are well worth a visit and they are only a short stroll from the Centre of St Peter Port. It is a place where one can smell the perfume of the past and the peace of the present intertwined.

Here is a place where you can take time to take in the fascinating story of how the island has become the semi-cosmopolitan holiday and finance centre it is today, dating all the way back from Prehistoric times. The museum is open all year round, and is based around an existing Victorian bandstand, managing to incorporate the story of the island from the present day back to Neolithic times.

The Rona Cole Art Gallery (so-named after a former Director of the museum) is home to an ever changing display of works from the Museum's permanent art collection and the Exhibition Gallery has an ongoing programme of additional exhibitions which aim to appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Another facet of the Museum is the annual heritage pass giving unlimited entry to Castle Cornet, Fort Grey (the Cup and Saucer at Rocquaine Bay) and several of Jersey's museums and Alderney Museums. There is also a 3 venue ticket.

Sausmarez Park Folk Museum: Sausmarez Park was once owned by Lord de Sausmarez, the famous admiral of the Napoleonic wars. Now owned by The States of Guernsey. Within the Park is a Folk Museum where people can see what life was like all those many years ago. It contains an extensive collection of agricultural implements, horse drawn vehicles, furniture, costume and tableaux of cottage interiors, and is open from April to October.

Castle Cornet: The building of Castle Cornet, "a most invincible place situated upon an accessible rock" half a mile from the shore, was begun, according to do documentary evidence, in the 13th Century. Excavations by the Island's Heritage Committee have revealed some of the medieval walls of this ancient citadel, together with an abundant variety of artefacts representing the layers of over seven hundred turbulent years.

In 1947, King George made a gift of the Castle to the people of Guernsey and it now houses a number of different museums and galleries. These include the "Story of Castle Cornet" Museum and the superb Maritime Museum which traces the history of the island from pre-Roman times to the present day.

Castle Cornet also has museums dedicated to the Guernsey Militia and to 201 Squadron of the RAF. A series of Gardens reflect different periods in the Castle's history, namely The Sutler's Garden of the 16th century, Lambert's Garden of the 17th and the Governor's Garden of the 18th. Light meals and drinks are available in the attractive refectory.

Fort Grey: Standing on a small islet in the centre of Rocquaine Bay, this 19th-century Martello tower was built on the remains of an earlier medieval fort. The old Chateau de Rocquaine may have been completely cut off at high tide but today access to Fort Grey, or the Cup and Saucer, as it is more affectionately known, is by causeway.

Fort Grey is now run by the Heritage Committee as a shipwreck museum and was opened to the public in 1976. The museum details the islands position in the shipping lanes of the English Channel, the treacherous navigational hazards which litter the west coast, and how the Hanois Lighthouse was built. There are artefacts recovered from wrecks, sad souvenirs of souls who perished when their ships were trapped between an irresistable force and an immovable object - the sea and Guernsey's granite reef.
